How to Use the Volcano Hybrid: Setup, Filling the Bag and First Session

To use the Volcano Hybrid, put it on a flat, stable surface, plug it in, press HEAT and set a temperature between 40 °C and 230 °C. Fill the filling chamber with ground herb up to the lower edge of the hopper, screw on the cap and fit the chamber to the hot air outlet. Tap AIR to preheat for a few seconds, then lock a stretched balloon onto the chamber and let it fill. Switch the pump off, take the balloon away and inhale through the mouthpiece, or use the tube kit for a direct draw.

This guide walks through a first session step by step, using the Storz & Bickel instructions for use and support pages as the source for every instruction. It is part of our Storz & Bickel guides. If you are still choosing a device, our overview of Storz & Bickel vaporizers and the Solo 3 vs Volcano Hybrid review are good places to start.

1. What Is in the Box

The Volcano Hybrid is a desktop hot air generator. A hybrid heating system warms the air and the filling chamber together, and a built-in pump moves that hot air through your herb. The box includes everything you need for a first session:

  • The Volcano Hybrid and a power cord
  • Three EASY VALVE balloons with mouthpiece, plus one EASY VALVE balloon with adapter
  • A tube kit for direct inhalation
  • A filling chamber with cap ring, a normal screen set and a cleaning brush
  • An air filter set and a herb grinder
  • The instructions for use

Storz & Bickel lists the size as about 20 x 18 cm (7.9 x 7.1 inches), so it needs a permanent spot on a desk or shelf rather than a place in a bag.

2. Setting Up and Heating Up

Put the Volcano Hybrid on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface and do not leave it unattended while it is running. Before you plug in, check that the mains voltage matches the rating on the device and that the cord and plug are in good condition.

  1. Plug in. The display runs through its sequences and shows the firmware number, then a mains indicator.
  2. Press the touch button marked HEAT. The upper orange number is the actual temperature and the lower white number is your set temperature.
  3. Wait until the two numbers match. The unit tells you by briefly switching the pump on (you can turn that sound off in the Web App). Depending on the temperature you set, heating can take up to about two minutes.

Once the target is reached the Hybrid holds it, so you can take your time loading the chamber. The default automatic switch-off is 30 minutes, and you can change it in the Web App.

3. Choosing a Temperature

The range is 40 °C to 230 °C (104 °F to 446 °F). A short tap on plus or minus moves the set value by one degree, holding the button makes it run continuously, and pressing plus and minus together switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit. A factory reset (hold HEAT for 10 seconds while the unit is on) returns the set temperature to 180 °C.

Storz & Bickel notes that the temperature inside the chamber cannot be measured during use, because the sensor sits at the heat exchanger. The temperature of the vapor you actually breathe in also depends on how much herb is in the chamber, the setting you chose, and how long and strongly you draw. Their advice is to let the unit reach the set temperature fully before you attach the balloon and start the pump. For the general idea of how heat affects flavor and vapor density, see our guide to finding the right temperature for flavor and efficiency.

4. Filling the Chamber

  1. Turn the filling chamber cap counter-clockwise to remove it.
  2. Fill the chamber with ground herb, no higher than the lower edge of the hopper. Do not pack it down.
  3. Check that the screens are clear of herb, then screw the cap back on.
  4. Place the chamber on the hot air outlet and turn it clockwise. Do not over-tighten the threads, because forcing them can damage the device.

A medium grind works well because it leaves room for air to pass. The herb grinder in the box is a good start. After every session, clean the screens with the brush so they do not clog.

5. Filling the Balloon

  1. Tap AIR to switch the pump on. The chamber and herb need a few seconds to preheat before aroma appears.
  2. Take the mouthpiece off the balloon, stretch the balloon tight and stand it vertically on the chamber. It locks into place and opens the valve, and the balloon starts to fill.
  3. Fill it only with the amount of vapor you expect to use in roughly the next 10 minutes. Do not fill it until it is under pressure. Watch the density as it fills.
  4. Tap AIR again to stop the pump, then lift the balloon off together with the chamber by turning the cap knobs counter-clockwise.
  5. Detach the balloon from the chamber. The valve closes automatically so the vapor stays inside.
  6. Press the mouthpiece onto the valve, put it to your lips and press lightly against it to open the valve. Breathe in slowly and evenly. Release pressure and the valve closes.

Do not blow into the balloon. The manual points out that this reduces moisture build-up and the risk of contamination. As it empties you can stretch the balloon taut to draw out the last of the vapor. The chamber stays hot, so only touch the textured grip until it cools, and do not leave the chamber sitting on the hot air outlet except while you fill the balloon.

6. Using the Tube Kit Instead

The tube kit gives a direct, continuous draw with no balloon to detach. Switch the pump off first, fit the tube directly onto the preheated chamber and turn the chamber clockwise until it stops. Then breathe in slowly through the mouthpiece for a few seconds. Use a tube of at least one metre, because a shorter one will not cool the vapor enough and can burn. The manual says to replace the tube about every two weeks, so keep a spare tube length in mind.

7. The Web App and Firmware Updates

You do not need an app to run the Hybrid, but the Storz & Bickel Web App lets you set temperatures, switch units, dim the display, change the auto shut-off and view charge and operating information. Because the native app was withdrawn from the app stores, the Web App runs in a browser.

  1. Switch on the Hybrid and make sure Bluetooth is on and not held by another device.
  2. Open app.storz-bickel.com in a supported browser: Chrome on Mac, Chrome or Edge on Windows, Chrome on Android (with Location Services on), or the Bluefy browser on iPhone.
  3. Tap Connect and choose your Volcano Hybrid.

Firmware updates are available for the Volcano Hybrid and the Venty through the same Web App. On iPhone use Bluefy (WebBLE cannot update firmware), keep the vaporizer next to your phone throughout, and do not interrupt the update. If the display ever shows BL 000, the manufacturer says a firmware update is mandatory.

8. After Your Session

  • Switch off the heater and let the Hybrid cool. Pack it away only when it has cooled completely.
  • Take the chamber apart for cleaning once it is cool. Isopropyl alcohol or warm water with dish liquid are the manufacturer's suggested cleaners; dry every part fully.
  • Replace the balloon and the tube about every two weeks for hygiene, and do not share them between people.

Replacement Easy Valve balloon bag for the Volcano Hybrid

When a balloon gets stretched, cloudy or hard to clean, the replacement Easy Valve balloon bag is a simple swap. A fresh Easy Valve normal screen set is the other part worth keeping in a drawer. You can see everything that fits in our Volcano accessories and replacement parts collection.

Final Thoughts

The Volcano Hybrid looks like a lot of steps on paper, but a session quickly becomes routine: heat, fill the chamber, preheat, fill the balloon, enjoy. The details that matter most are the simple ones: wait for the set temperature, fill the chamber only to the hopper edge, fill the balloon with only what you will use, and keep the screens clean. Once you have that rhythm, the tube kit and the Web App are easy extras. For spare balloons, screens and other fitting parts, browse the Volcano accessories collection.
